Who we are
healthdownsouth is an initiative of New Zealand's southern most district health board (DHBs) - Southern DHB. As a District Health Board, we provide government-funded hospital services to our region and fund other primary health services. There are 20 DHBs across New Zealand - each responsible for planning, funding and delivering health care services for the population of their geographical area.
We directly employ a wide range of health professionals - we are the employer, not an agency - and welcome direct enquiries regarding employment opportunities with our hospitals and health services in southern New Zealand.
Where we are
Located in the lower South Island of New Zealand, we service a combined population base of 289,000, with 70% of our population based in the two cities of Dunedin and Invercargill and the remainder spread across towns and rural communities, set amongst New Zealand's iconic tourist destinations - Queenstown, Wanaka, Fiordland, Stewart Island, Central Otago and the Otago Peninsula. See our location map for more detail.
Our hospitals
Both Dunedin and Southland Hospitals are teaching facilities, working in close collaboration with the University of Otago and its prestigious Dunedin School of Medicine (established in 1877) - producing clinical graduates for the whole country plus providing health services for the people of Otago and Southland.
- Dunedin Hospital is a 388-bed, tertiary level, University teaching hospital, providing all specialties and most sub-specialties, with 3,000 staff.
- Southland Hospital is a near new 181-bed, secondary level, University teaching hospital providing all specialties, with 1500 staff.
- Rural Hospitals - there are six smaller rural hospitals located in scenic towns around our region, which we also recruit health professionals to.
- General Practice - we also connect GPs with our region's urban and rural practices to explore employment opportunities
An outdoors lifestyle
If you love the outdoors and are looking for a safe, smaller sized city with wide open spaces, affordable housing, excellent schools and the ability to pursue your hobbies and spend time with your family after work each day, then Invercargill and Dunedin cities are ideally suited. What's more, our region also offers the best in outdoors life with two of New Zealand's National Parks, four main ski fields, cycling, hunting, wind surfing and beaches all close by without traffic jams to get in your way.
